Abstract
3rd Millenium Ingestion is the story of Ele, who lives in a fridge and takes care of its contents. He follows his own ideas around the care of food, for which he founds his very own workplace, the Taste Institute. One day Ele finds a package of expired Haribo Tropifrutti jelly gummies. The gummies talk and immediately disturb Ele’s work and conduct of the Taste Institute. Within five scenes around Ele and the gummies, this fictional story blurs and confounds matters of ingestion, digestion and metabolism by mixing up and mutually contaminating food items with non-food items, gummies with beings and fridge with microbiome. When strange happenings occur with the arrival of the talkative, highly processed artificial food items, the future of Ele’s Taste Institute is at stake. Originating in a 1980’s West German positive capitalism era, the expired jelly gummies come with a flair of “escape from everyday life” (Haribo, 2024) and exemplify industrialized foods entering the body. Against the ever filled fridge and its richness, stacked with projections of lifestyles and identities, the expired jelly gummies take him to a place called the Tummy Institute, where Ele faces and questions his very own taste.
